We Are Back!

 The University of Derby Publishing Society is back! 

After the turbulent year for students, the publishing society unfortunately disbanded for the previous academic year but a group of third years have been putting in lots of work to bring the publishing society back for the academic year of 2021-2022! 

So what is the society?

The publishing society is an academic society (don't worry, this doesn't mean extra classes or assessments!). It is aimed towards anyone who has an interest in books or the world of publishing, not just publishing students. We meet fortnightly to discuss all things bookish and to plan and work on our magazine Fine Print that is released four times throughout the year - December, February, April and June. 

Who can join?

Everyone! We need people who will write the articles, find out about trends in the book and publishing community, typesetters, designers, proofreaders, editors, etc. There is a lot of work that goes into making a magazine and there are so many different options of how you could help in the production process!

So, is it all work then?

Absolutely not! We appreciate that university is already very difficult and comes with a heavy workload. The production of the magazine is spread over so many people that we hope the only time you would have to put into it would be during the meeting days (I would guess at about 5 hours a month maximum!). 

The society isn't just about the magazine though! We have lots of exciting plans such as visits to museums (did someone say a chance to look at the behind the scenes process of producing a Roald Dahl book? Yes PLEASE!), socials, guest talks from authors and professionals in the publishing industry, and so much more. 

How do I get involved?

Visit us at Freshers Fair! We will have a table at Kedleston Road campus on the 21st and 22nd September from 10am-4pm, and members from the committee will be ready and waiting to answer any questions you may have (rumour has it there will also be games and prizes!). When the new academic year officially begins you can also head to our page on the Union of Students website and buy your membership. It's not expensive - just £5 for the entire year to help with printing costs and give us a boost for our welcome party!
